This applet draws a "fractal plasma cloud". Random colours are chosen for the four corners of the square; colours half way between these are interpolated, as is the centre point, giving a total of nine points. These nine points form the vertices of a 2x2 grid, each square of which is coloured recursively using this algorithm.
There are two threads working here; one rendering (constantly), one updating the image (occasional snapshot). You may sometimes see evidence of the recursive algorithm if the snapshot occurs at the right time (you might see a little staircase of squares).
